It’s project challenge time, and this month it involves a wooden pulley. I about let everyone down this month, as I’m woefully behind schedule. I’m telling you peeps, life is beyond crazy – am I right?! And I know you are nodding your heads and uh-huh-ing and totally agreeing with me! Seriously peeps – HOW do we do what we do?! We look at each other and shake our heads and say ‘I don’t know how you do it all’, all the while ‘doing it all ourselves’! What is ‘doing it all’? Doing all you do in a day PLUS what you see someone else do?
No.
Doing it all is what we do each day – ‘ALL’ just looks different for each person. So next time you are about to say that to someone STOP! Because you DO know how they do it all – they do it just like you do YOUR ALL every day. One second, one minute, one breathtaking hour at a time!
So on to Project Challenge and my Wooden Pulley – I’m behind schedule but it’s still Thursday and this project got put together (albeit a bit hastily and haphazardly) and this post is goin’ live 😀
It’s my extreme pleasure to bring you …
TADA!
A Wooden Pulley and a Pile of Junk turned into one amazing piece of wall art. (I really hope you know immediately what it is 😀 )
Do you see it? It’s supposed to SAY something? Word art created from a Wooden Pulley and old junk. I’m really hoping someone besides me can see what this is supposed to be! I’m telling you this is a bit out of my box. I’ve created some wall art out of junk before but nothing quite this primitive and abstract. And not quite this junky. That piece of junk on the end? That’s an old chainsaw chain. I know. WHO sees art or beauty in a chainsaw chain? (that would be me)
In the beginning our category for this month was gears. I think I even suggested that category. But you know what happened? No one had any gears! We all did, however have pulleys. So pulleys it became.
Yes, this is an old pulley. An old wooden pulley and it came from my Grandpas workshop. I have no idea why he had it – I doubt he ever used it as a pulley. I think he got it somewhere and thought it was cool (like I do) and just never did anything with it. I’ve wished many times that I could show my Grandpa some of the stuff I’ve created with things I pulled from his shop.
I also had this pile of junk that was just too cool to toss. Just look at the old bluish color and the chippy white paint. And rust. A bit of rust always adds a lot of interest.
So I started playing.
The center part of the pulley came out creating a small circle. And the old horse bridle parts had a piece that could be called an H. The old chainsaw chain could be shaped into whatever I wanted and the old hinge could easily stand in as a lower case i. And that’s how OHiO came to be. (the word in wall art that is)
I grabbed a board out of the garage in my mad dash to put this piece together. I knew it probably wasn’t quite big enough but I figured I’d make it work somehow.
And I did. I had to maneuver and layer a bit but I got it all on the board.
I used nails and screws to hold everything in place. VERY haphazard and quite just a bit redneck but it’s holding together and it looks quite cute in my dining room. If I decide to take it to the shop I will first glue and nail things in place properly first I promise!
It’s junky, it’s quirky, it’s whimsical, it’s perfectly imperfect. And I’m growing rather fond of it!
I’m curious though – what would YOU have done with this old pulley? Did I mention that it’s broken and comes apart in two pieces? What else could have been created with this? I know there are some awesome, creative minds out there that probably would have thought up something much different and I’d love to hear what you have to say!
The hinge can also be flipped down to make the i even quirkier if you want – this piece is truly unique and one-of-a-kind!
Oh peeps – enough about my wall art – go see what my friends did with THEIR pulleys!

omg you are a true artist Jill!!!!! To use the broken pulley like this is genius. Sooo glad it found you!!!!! I see beauty in scrap and crap as well!!!! Love the art work, one of a kind!!!!
Thanks Christine! When it’s wooden or metal it just seems a shame to toss the stuff in the trash – seems there should be a way to use it all!
Ha!! I thought is said “HI” but Ohio!! I see it now. So clever!!! I probably would’ve caught it right away had I lived there. 😉
When I said that about you doing it all, I meant that you manage to get your posts out despite how busy you are. I do appreciate the perspective on what we might see “it all” as. I used to hate it when people said the phrase “i don’t know how you do it all” to me while I had two toddlers and my husband was on travel literally 98% of the time. I physically couldn’t handle it at all and my health paid for it. What a learning experience. Whenever we try to do everything, it seems to blow up in our faces. Just not possible!! 😉
It’s quirky and unique – can’t deny that! LOL! And no, no one ever does it ALL! We all just have different things we do get done!
