Last Friday of September. Time for another Project Challenge – this month the category was to use a rusty item somehow. What to choose, what to choose. Cool, rusty items can be found in abundance if you just start looking. I had a handful of ideas but 4 rusty hairpin legs saved from the landfill won out.
I got the rusty bench legs from a friend who had a garage sale last spring. It was a rainy day and I wasn’t sure I was going to venture out. Then I received a text that there was this sort of cute bench at the sale but two of the legs fell off so it was going in the trash. But the legs were kind of neat and maybe I’d want them?
I rushed right over and saved those rusty, hairpin legs from the landfill.
Travis had a bunch of wood he had salvaged and some of it was just perfect for a bench. He routed the edges and got it all ready for me to paint the wood and then it sat there. He finally got tired of waiting on me to paint it and put the legs on the bench top and set it on the front porch. And I eventually got around to painting it!
I painted it British Grey and used Limewash Glaze and I am totally in love with this combination!
I had considered painting the legs but somehow the rusty look works for me with this piece.
I love the bench here on my porch but the paint and glaze I used aren’t formulated to withstand the sun, heat, ice, snow, rain, sleet, and all the rest of the weather Ohio dumps on us! And I really have no space for it inside, though I’ve been trying to figure out a perfect spot for it.
Most likely this piece is going to have to get a price tag added to it and a spot found for it at the shop. Someone out there DOES have the perfect spot for it 😀
I love how this bench, with its rusty legs and limewash finish, works so well with my plaid decor and my painted and glittered faux pumpkins.
Our cats like to curl up on this bench and their food dishes are in the little alcove formed by the porch and the house – to the right of this photo. I had a hard time getting this photo shoot done without one of the cats photo bombing. Several of the pics had a head or a tail in them! I finally had one of the girls come get the cats so I could finish.
Maybe next fall when I do a photo shoot on the porch there will be some new window trim and siding to show off too! (I can always dream 🙂 )
And now, let’s go see what my friends have come up with for a rusty item and what they have done with it!

I like the table but I’d have to paint the legs and the top so it could stay on the porch!!!
If I decide to keep it on the porch I would add an outdoor clear coat to it all so it would last longer in the weather 🙂
Good morning to Ohio from WA Jill, Your bench is super awesome and unique. The British Grey is the perfect match for the rusty legs. ANd the way you displayed the bench on the front porch with the throw and pumpkins is magazine worthy!!!! XOXOXO Christine from Little Brags
Thanks so much Christine! I love how the pumpkins and plaid complemented this bench.
LOVE your bench!!! What a dream to have someone give you those hairpin legs…I have been looking around for them with no luck! Despite your desire to have knew trim and paint, I love the rustic background your porch gives to your photos. 😉
I know Michele, I was so glad no one else had nabbed them before I got there! And so thankful my friend called to tell me they were there!
So this super duper cute bench was basically free? Wow! I just love it and I’m sure someone is going to snatch it up once it is for sale. Your photos are alays styled so wonderfully too!
Yes basically it was free! The paint I paid for but it only took a little and I used paint from cans that were already open from other projects so basically free there too right?!
Jill that is a great little bench. I love the legs! Great find and repurpose.
Thank you Susan, I love it too. I have it stashed in my workroom – it is going to have to go to the shop and be put up for sale because I just don’t have a spot for it but I’m enjoying it while I can! It will make a fun display in the shop too!
It looks great on your porch. I would have a hard time letting it go, but I’m sure whoever buys it will enjoy it in their home or on their porch.Wish my husband was that pro-active with all of my half finished projects! ;o)
some days my hubby wishes I didn’t have a creative brain that was always thinking up new ideas and dragging stuff home that could be ‘cool’!
Jill,
Your pictures are super pretty. Love the plaid with white chippy paint and. of course, the rusty legs on your bench.
Thanks Holly! I love these old legs and the bench my hubby created with them!
Hi, I hopped over from Lil Braggs. Love those fabulous rusty legs! What a fun challenge. I lust for rust! lol! The bench looks great for fall with your plaid throw. I adore plaid almost as much as rust! I have a link party, Share Your Cup Thursday. It’s about sharing the things that make you happy. I’d love if you shared some time.
hugs,
Jann
Thanks so much Jann!
Ooh, I love those fabulous rusty legs. I sure wish I could find something like them to save from the landfill. Great job on the bench. Thanks so much, Jill, for sharing at Vintage Inspiration Party.
They are great aren’t they Betsy? Keep your eyes open – you never know what you will find out there!
What a great repurpose and lucky find! I love the whole vignette. Thanks for sharing it at the Vintage Inspiration Party!
Thanks Angie, I wanted to keep this bench so bad. But I had no room. So it’s in the shop. Hopefully it will find a loving home for the holidays 😉
Beautiful job! I love the whole vignette!! Found you on Vintage Inspiration party
