Junk Visionaries is back today with a fun category – desktop/office ideas. The project I originally wanted to do didn’t happen because it involved cutting some wood with the table saw and my husband has been too busy to help me. And if I must admit it – the table saw scares me just a bit and I’m not willing to use it all by myself. Someday I will but not until I can get some hands on experience with my husband right there to protect guide me.
I recently went to a small but fun flea market that had some fun finds waiting for me to carry them home and love on them. I picked up a couple old, wood ammunition boxes for $4 each. Happy dance! I love a fun find that is super cheap too 😆
My first thought when I saw them at the flea was that one of them would make a simple, easy desktop organizer and I could accomplish it without sawing anything. Someday, I promise, I WILL use the table saw!
Today I bring you – Ammunition Box to Desktop Organization – part of the Junk Visionaries Blog Hop.
At the bottom of the post you will find links to some other great projects. Make sure to hop over and see what my friends have been up to!
I love the lettering on the outsides of the box and the tongue in groove construction makes it authentically ‘old’.
The inside was rather a mess of spots and drips of paint.
I painted the inside, added the wood arrow to the outside for a fun detail, and filled the box up with pint canning jars. The jars were salvaged from my Grandma’s basement and became the perfect dividers for my ammunition box turned desktop organization.
I thought it needed a bit more to kick up the ‘cute factor’ so I added some thin, velvet ribbon that’s been in my stash for a few years now. The yellow ribbon tied the yellow arrow in very nicely. The yellow arrow is made from old pallet wood and some of the wood was mulberry (so my husband says) and thus the wood is yellow by nature and not by paint 😛
All ready to hold some desktop items.
The items I needed this for are all my paint brushes, paint sticks, and other tools used in painting. This is so perfect for this. As a desktop organizer it’s a bit large for most desks. But for me, in my workroom, this is just what I needed. I never have enough space to hold all my brushes and they get crammed in helter-skelter, which is not good for them at all. It ruins the bristles and also makes them hard to find!
The arrow doesn’t show up in the photos as yellow as it really is. It really is very much yellow, and it’s the wood’s original color and not stained or painted! So cool.
This could also be used to hold pencils, scissors, pens, and other stuff that needs to be organized in an office/work space.
And because I couldn’t resist – it could also be used to hold flowers. Versatile pieces are the best!I love that this piece came together quickly, and is so very functional. And it’s cute too.
Now that you’ve seen my Junk piece turned into Desktop Organization go see what my friends came up with!
And come back next month, Oct. 5, to see our Nature Inspired Projects!

Now that’s explosively cute!
Thank you so much Bernideen! I’m loving how great this is to organize my paint brushes!
I love this! I actually have a table-sized ammo box that I’ve had sitting around waiting for me to get the guts to turn it into a table. One of these days……I love what you did with the arrow as an accent, so cute! I need something like this for my paintbrushes, too:)
xoKathleen
Kathleen that will be an awesome table! And this one works so well for my brushes!
This is great! I need to make one of these. My favorite part is the little arrow attached to the side. Thanks for sharing!
Super easy project Carrie – even if you had to make your own box it wouldn’t take much to get one put together!
Jill.. this is a brilliant idea! Not only does your organizer look very stylish but it also is so practical. As I was reading through your post I thought what a great way to showcase flowers from the garden and then you shared that later in the post! Love it!
LOL! Great minds think alike 🙂 I may need to make another one of these because I liked it so well with the flowers but it is so wonderful having it to hold all my brushes I won’t want to empty it to use for a vase!
This is such a great piece and like you mentioned, functional. The added arrow on the front is super cute! Great job!
Thank you Sara, it was such an easy project but it is so very useful and is working out so wonderful for my paint brushes.
I love it when a project comes together like this and yours is just darling! I love the added yellow string and the juxtaposition it gives the masculine ammo box, and the arrow is just the icing on the cake! Your staging and photography have me drooling my friend ;o)
Thanks Lucy – you made my day with your super great comment!
REALLY cute Jill! I love the wood arrow detail you added.
Tania
Thanks Tania, I love the arrow detail too 🙂
I need one of these – my brushes could use some TLC. But I love that it is so versatile and can be used for just about anything. Love the arrow. Cathy
Thanks Cathy – it is so awesome for my brushes!
This turned out so cute! I love the arrow. It is just good old plain functional!
Thank you Kim – I can’t believe how great this thing is for organizing my brushes!
Oh, I love it!!
The ribbon adds just the right pop!!! And I agree, versatility rocks!
I love the paintbrushes in it. Such a fun look.
