Are you ready for summer yet? You know I am! I’m never ready for cold weather – I really should live in a climate that is warm year round. I don’t, though, so I make the best of it. (most of the time)
Today I’m reminiscing a little – I posted yesterday that my 9 and 11 year old girls are on their way to Kansas with their Grandparents. And it made me think back to our last trip to Kansas. We went last summer – seems like a long time ago already. They had a lot of rain before we got there so the creek beside my sister’s house was up and flowing over the dirt road. All the kids, from the youngest to the teenagers played in the water – and the mud. They made some pretty cool Mud Hut Creations and I want to share them with you.
I don’t have any desire to play in the mud but I think what the kids created last summer is pretty cool. I love that they used their imaginations and God’s earth to play and express their creativity.
The little hut at the side of the large creation was so cute.
So much detail and work involved. The kids kept saying they wanted it to stay that way forever. They were quite upset when it rained one night and the water washed the lower Mud Hut Creations away. We gently reminded them that they were building their creations in a creek bed. It was probably good to realize that it wouldn’t last forever.
I’m not sure what this metropolis was but it’s pretty cool too. I’m sure if I ask my girl they would be able to tell us exactly what each thing was and who built what.
They also found frogs and kept them in a bucket for awhile. Perhaps the Mud Hut Creations were for the frogs? The rather wild, rugged beauty of Kansas. Don’t let anyone tell you Kansas is boring and flat and ugly. It’s not! Yes, if you take I-70 through Kansas it can seem flat and boring. But venture into the state a bit and you will find so much beauty. Wide open skies – nothing tops a western sunset! And the rugged hills of Barber County – nothing flat about that! Anyway. Kansas is beautiful. And my girlies are arriving at my sister’s today. I doubt they will play in the mud – although it is warmer there than it is here. I know they are going to have so much fun though!
So what do you think of the Mud Hut Creations? Would you have done this as a kid?!
Jill
I remember playing in mud when I was a kid. Yeah, I would agree with you that I wouldn’t want to do it now though. LOL! Your daughter’s mud huts are cute. I never thought to do that when I was a kid. Of course, growing up in GA, our mud is red clay and it stains! Not so nice. I’m sure you’re adjusting to a quiet house right now. Hope your kids have fun with their grandparents.
I played in the mud some too – I remember turning the hose on a trickle one day and creating some rivers and roads and stuff in a flower bed. It was fun!
My boys would love the mud huts. I will be certain to show them the pictures.
They also love building fairy gardens and waiting for garden gnomes. 🙂
I think your boys and my girls would have a ton of fun together 🙂 I really want to do a fairy garden with my girls this Spring – maybe I’ll have them build some mud huts for it!
I was a tomboy when growing up. We lived beside a creek in a small town in northeastern Ohio (Madison.) I would make tunnels through the bank above the creek & run my brothers cars & trucks through them. I also made mud pies. Yes, I would have loved the mud huts. Here in central Virginia we have red dirt. My children used to play in the dirt & mud & it was really tough to get the red stains out of their clothes. I still “play” in the dirt but instead of making mud pies & tunnels I plant flowers & vegetables.:)
yes, that red mud – it’s HARD to get out! I play in the dirt in the Springtime planting flowers and some herbs 🙂
We have a creek that borders our farm. Over Christmas my sons, ages 26, 21, and 15 along with my husband 55 years old and my 22 year old niece, spend quite a few days down at the creek playing and building all kinds of mud stuff!! They had a ball. We live in Georgia and the weather was somewhat overcast but certainly warm enough for them to work, I mean play, for days!!
That’s awesome Ann!
You can tell these children have been blessed with their moms creative genes. I bet they have creative dads and grandparents too. What fun and great memories of visiting cousins who live in a totally different area.In their reactions to the rain washing their creations away I couldn’t help but think of the scripture and song of the foolish man builds his house on the sand and the wise man builds his house on the rock(Jesus).
Thanks Nancy – and that is a great thought to go with this post – about the foolish and wise men and their buildings.
Oh my Goodness! Those are precious! I lived in the suburbs near a busy road but my mom gave me a bucket of water, a pot and spoon and a small patch of dirt on the corner of the yard and it kept me busy for hours. I would have been in heaven with all of that! So sweet, thanks for sharing.
Sounds like your Mama was a wise one! My mom always said the happiest kids were the ones that were allowed to get dirty 🙂
