Summer is ending and it’s time to say Good-bye.
This week I felt fall in the air and saw it in the sky. Yes the weather is still hot and muggy but there is a slight change in the air that says Autumn has arrived. it’s subtle this change – a shift in air movement, the tinge of harvest smell, the color of leaves just beginning to pale and change if you look very closely. The sky’s color and mood change ever so slightly. School is in session. Summer has come to a close.
The colorful splendor of Autumn will soon burst forth in glorious array. The air will turn crisp and a walk down the sidewalk will be accompanied by the crunch of leaves underfoot. Jackets and scarves, sweaters and hats will appear and layering cute outfits will be on the dress agenda. Hot drinks and soup will soon be on the menus for dinner. Football fills the days for the sports junkies. The early evening twilight calls for cozy evenings with the heat turned up or a fire in the hearth. Autumn days are cheerful, happy, and fun.
In the shadowy background of this glorious set of Autumn, Winter hovers – it’s cold breath and storm clouds just waiting their turn to crash onto the stage of life. The polar vortexes are swirling, ready to whoosh south and drop the temps into the teens and lower.
It’s that chilly shadow that throws a pall over the delightful Autumn days for me. If you are like me, winter is not your friend. Aside from being able to wear cute layered outfits, fun scarves, and boots that is. And I’d gladly give up those outfits scarves and boots and blithely don flip flops and t-shirts for the rest of my days if summer would come to stay forever!
But I am thankful that I have those warm articles of clothing since I live in a climate that includes winter. I am so thankful for a warm, insulated house, (It hasn’t always been warm and insulated). And I am ever so grateful that winter has a silver lining – Spring.
So as we say Good-bye to Summer once again, I plan to fully embracing Autumn in all it’s gloriousness! And ignore the shadow of Winter while I can! Here’s to a very happy Autumn.

Oh Jill,
The summers in the desert can be so brutal that I look forward to winter!! By the end of August I am saying please hurry winter. Ours is a short winter though and I have even been known to wear flip flops in December!
Blessings
Cecelia
yes, I’ve heard the desert summers are suffocating! But I would love to spend my winters in the desert!
I’m so ready for Fall! Have an awesome week and loved the post!
I love fall – and fall decor – I really need to fluff my house!
I miss fall in the north. We lived in Westlake, Ohio three years and in Maryland and Kentucky many years. We don’t have fall in Florida. So we just imagine and decorate for it anyway!
We do have delightful days in the fall!
I lived in northeastern Ohio (Lake County) for 33 years & moved here to Virginia in 1986. I have grown used to the mild, short winters (although this past winter was especially cold)& long spring summers & falls here. I don’t miss those blizzards & tons of snow I lived with for so many years.
Yeah, I can’t imagine missing the cold and snow. but we manage – most of the time 😀 I’d move south – if I could just get all my family and friends to move too! LOL!
Sounds like you could stand to live in San Diego area for few years Jill. It is beautiful there for most any season. We’d been known to be down at beach on New Years Day, all 4 kids loved that their Mother loved the beach and water.
Oooh, all itchy being out getting laundry down and putting chickens to bed for night. Little rascals they love to be running all over yard late at night. Usually now we put them to bed by 8:00p.m. When hubs or I go out they come running as know it’s time for them to be inside their little yard and coop. It’s pretty much dark by 8 pm now. Seemed like it happened so quickly. We got to MT in May/92 and it would stay light until 11 p.m., were out on 20 acres/Canyon Ferry Lake south of Helena.
Having lived in all climates and areas I just kinda roll with whatever season it is. I enjoy winter with cold temps, snow and all the clothes to keep us warm. We moved to MT after living in San Diego area for 21 yrs. People kept saying the winter would chase us back to CA but we didn’t. KY winters not too bad, just more ice, after 5 yrs in KY we moved to western CO. After our winters in MT it seems pretty tame here in western CO. I think Fall was prettiest in KY. Loved winters in MT with 20-40 below temps during day and San Diego summers, all 21 yrs. of them. Summer and Spring here in CO are hot and pretty. For few years winter has gone straight into summer, no Spring. I like it when after being cooped up with doors and windows closed we can leave them open for while.
Don’t remember too much about Cleveland, Oh summers or others seasons. Can remember walking around at night with parents in winter, loved it then. Guess there’s something to be said for having lived in different climates for few years at a time. I lived in Tucson’s heat for 20 yrs.(after Cleveland) and don’t think I could take that heat for too long. Tucson was before San Diego.
Would think maybe some folks that don’t like winter would have hard time moving to different climate. You just get used to whatever it is. Happy weekend Jill
I’ve heard San Diego have pretty amazing weather! I’d love to be able to go somewhere warm every winter!
I love fall decor, but I’m not ready for summer to end yet. I find myself feeling that way most years anymore. But we are having beautiful fall weather today with sunshine and windows wide open and I LOVE it! And no wind!!
I don’t like summer to end either. If the days were hotter and it lasted longer like it used to it would help!
