How to tell you are really on the mend after having the flu : When you get excited about a thrifted chair find!
Remember this post? I lauded my friend for bringing me and my family Culver’s Custard when we were all recovering from the flu and craving some cold, creamy deliciousness. Well that same friend text me the next day. The text included a picture of a chair. A chair that was sitting at Goodwill. With a price tag that proclaimed it $8.99. I promptly text her back and informed her she was not to leave the store without that chair. She replied, ‘Are you sure? The arms are a little loose, Travis might have to tighten them.’ I responded ‘I can tighten the arms – look at those LEGS!’ So she bought the chair and dropped it off to me. I made her just put it on the porch and leave just in case I still had germs that I might inadvertently breath on her.
So what do you think? Would you have left this beauty there??
You don’t consider her a beauty? Ah, but that’s where you are wrong my dear! You have to look beyond the not-so-pretty blue fabric she is dressed in. And the old, worn finish.
Squint. And dream with me. Soft white or grey paint. A lovely linen ‘dress’. Oh yes, she is indeed a lovely lady. She just needs a little makeover. Sort of like ‘The Princess Diaries’. With a little tweaking, a little guidance, a little instruction in the proper way to dress and sit, and perform, she will be living a delightful dream-come-true. Provided, of course, that her mentor gets to her makeover promptly. And since I doubt Julie Andrews will waltz in to get this one in shape for the dance, I will have to take this makeover upon myself. Wish me luck. I really have no deadline. And you KNOW what a bad thing that can be.
What do you think? Will I get this chair remade sometime in 2013 or will it still be languishing away under piles of fabric and projects when 2014 rolls around??
I saw the chair! …and I left it there! I knew it could be cute and I even thought of you first thing but I DON’T HAVE YOUR TALENT and I neither do I have your number. I m happy it still found its way to your house. 🙂
Well! we better correct that – I will email you my phone number pronto!!!
Oh the magic with your eye for fabrics ~ I’m keeping my fingers crossed we get to see this beauty sooner than later!
Keep ’em crossed Pam, maybe it will get me in gear!
Fabulous chair!!!! For $8.99? What a score! You have a really great friend!
🙂 Yep, she’s the best friend a gal could have!
Well, yes she is a beauty. I see your vision, it’s going to be great!
Thank you Jennifer!
I have no doubt you can get it done and that it will be divine! You do not strike me as the type to fret over what to do, or about just doing it. It will be fun to see your skill in action on this one! I love her shape!
Liz
Liz, your confidence in me makes me blush! I can put things off when I don’t know for sure what how to do something. I always figure it out as I go but if it’s something new I can procrastinate with the best of them!
Now that is a GOOD friend! Custard and good will shopping by proxy?! I would have told her to buy it, too. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
Yep, she’s the best! I’d like to remake the chair soon so check back!
Can’t wait to see what you do with it! Hope you are all on the mend too!
Never had Culvers …. am I missing out?
Oh Nic! You are totally missing out! Get yourself to the nearest Culvers – stat!
Hi, Jill – I adore the chair! It’s a classic French Louis XV style armchair with beautiful proportions. I can’t wait to see how you’ll transform and update it. A wonderful fine!
And I love your grain sack Christmas stockings over at Fern Creek Cottage.
Cheers,
Loi
Thanks Loi – I love how wide the chair is! My 9 year old daughter thinks it is really strange that it is so wide! LOL!
I liked those stockings I made too – can’t wait to make some more for next Christmas! Thanks so much for coming back!
Yes, remake the princess! Caitlin is looking for a chair like this.
🙂 Well if I decide to sell it I’ll let Caitlin know!
I would’ve grabbed that chair if I knew how to sew like you do. I KNOW you will have it looking beautiful in no time! The lines of the chair are so pretty. I would paint it grey and make a drop cloth ruffled slip cover for the seat. I’d cover the little padded arms with the same material. Drooling!!!
Kelly, that is a GREAT idea! I hadn’t thought of just a little slip cover for the seat, I was thinking it would have to be completely reupholstered. Maybe I CAN get it redone soon!
I say do it now, so I can see the results! Please don’t make us wait until 2014 to see what miracle you work on it 🙂
I am thinking it is a project I should do pretty quick so it isn’t buried too deeply with fabric 😉
Hey! That “Comment LUV” feature you have is cool! Thank you! Off to see if I can add it on wordpress…
Sally, I like the comment Luv too – and I’m on wordpress so you should be able to use it too!
Oh, you lucky dog! Lucky to have scored that chair, but also for having such a good friend that knows you so well. It’s a beauty, and no, I wouldn’t have left it behind. What a steal! I’m sure whatever you end up doing with it will be fabulous. Can’t wait to see! (But can I come and steal it away if you haven’t touched it by this time next year????) 🙂
Debbie
🙂 If I haven’t touched it in a year you may come get it! 🙂 I think I just gave myself a deadline! LOL!
I absolutely see the beauty in that gorgeous chair. So glad your friend thought of you because there is a TON of potential. I hope you make time to tackle it because I know it’s going to look amazing.
I really want to do it soon Amy – will have to try to make time for it!
looks like it will be a cute and fun projects!!! so funny how a bunch of ladies go crazy for “those legs” 😉
🙂 Daniela, it is rather amusing how we love ‘great legs’ on our furniture! LOL!
I think the chair is very cute. But sitting in at Goodwill, I seriously doubt I would’ve noticed it. Good thing you have great friends with a keen sense of perception!!
It has taken me awhile to look beyond the old shabby ugly look of something sitting at goodwill. And I’m still learning. Going with a friend is a good thing sometimes – they notice stuff that I look past. But that’s only good if they notice it for you instead of noticing it to buy themselves!!! LOL!
So glad your friend let you know about the lovely chair. I can hardly wait to see what you do with her. You will get it done when you have the right feeling about her and what you’ll do with her, whatever and whenever you will get it done.
Sure wish our Goodwill in Grand Junction, CO would have bargains like that. They’ve gotten terribly expensive. Hope you’re feeling much better very soon and not have to worry about spreading nasty germs. It’s the pits isn’t it?
I’m excited about working on it! I have an idea – may work on some painting projects next week as my sewing machine and serger are going in for some service!
What happens if you paint it and a pink color starts to bleed through (ask me how I know)…….what do you do?
He Elaine, I haven’t had that happen to me yet, but I have heard ppl talk about that happening with a certain vintage of furniture. Something about the finish used. a good primer or kilz is supposed to cover and then you can use the paint you want it to be finished. Thanks for mentioning that because I think it might not be a bad idea with this chair.
