Today I got inspired to do a little more fall decorating in my house. I don’t usually do this much for fall – I usually wait for Christmas!! But I recently purchased some rope knots that I was wanting to use somewhere. And one of my neighbors has trees that are always losing branches. Those branches are hard for me to resist. We had some pretty high wind on Saturday so she had a pile of branches waiting to be hauled off by the guys who work for the city. So after lunch I headed out to get some decorating ‘supplies’. Dried Hydrangea, herbs, and some branches from my own yard and bushes and sticks and branches with leaves from my neighbors. She has never been out when I’m raiding her stick pile – wonder if she’s ever noticed them disappearing or wonders about them being hacked apart?!!
My Rope knots found a place of honor as a 3D piece of artwork. The knots are strung on twine. The sticks and herbs and leaves are all held together with twine and hot glue. This is the spot my Deer was eyeing. He’s happy now that it has a fall collection of goodies filling it, so he is going to stay where he is – for now at least.
This is one corner of my dining room – between the nook and the kitchen doorway.
I really need to do a blog post just for that pillow but since I haven’t got that accomplished yet, and I’ve had the pillow awhile, I decided this would be a good time to at least show it off!
I also put together this arrangement of sticks, branches with leaves, dried leaves, and dried Hydrangea. The container I’ve had for years. I actually had it in my garage sale , but it didn’t sell, so I grabbed it out of the box of leftovers today and decided to use it.
The whole arrangement is rather large but I rather like it – a bit of overstatement is kind of fun sometimes. It does sit right beside our front door so hopefully it doesn’t get knocked over and scattered hither and yon by the littles who populate this house!
I had to include one of my clay tags from Jami at Freckled Laundry!
I like how the arrangement ended up framing my sheep picture. I didn’t plan that – it just happened.
My shelf inside my front door received some branch adornment too.
As did the top of the piano. It’s so fun to bring a touch of the season into decor that is already there simply by taking some clippers and going for a walk around the yard. (And the neighbor’s yard 😉 )
I added some herbs to the scalloped glass dish holding a faux acorn. I loved the simple look of just the acorn but I can’t ever seem to leave the ‘simple look’ alone. I always find something to tuck in or add!
The nook side of my dining room. And a peek at my table. I need to do a post about my table. I think it’s arrival was before my blogging days.
A little wider view.
And a shot of the entry. The orange box is slated for a paint job. And I’m thinking the inside of the door is too. I think I’m ready for it to go back to matching the inside walls instead of matching the outside of the door.
And there you have it. I still need to do some work to the other side of my dining room. And to my living room. My shelf that spans one whole wall of my living room has become a storage place for several vintage frames I picked up here and there over the summer. It really doesn’t look like I’d like it to – time for a complete redo!
What does your fall decor consist of? Do you raid your neighbors stick pile?!
Jill
Thanks for sharing your way of using Monkey Fist Knots. I made some awhile back and they sit unused. I also collect branches, leaves and pine cones, they make fall decorating festive.
Sharon, tucking those knots in a glass bowl with leaves and branches would be fun too! I think they really are a great addition to fall decor!
oh, Jill – I’m really loving everything at your house, right now. It looks so peaceful and calm and TIDY!! 🙂
i LOVE that rope knot arrangement! really – a lot! it’s not all glued to the wall i’m sure. . . how did you make that??
(by the way – i know that orange kind of stands out in your color scheme – but I love orange ! one of my favorite colors!)
breida
Thank you Breida – just outside the frame of the photos it’s not-so-tidy! But I understand how you feel – you are going through some major home improvements and tidy isn’t really the word I’d use to describe what we have when we are hard at work on those!! No, that arrangement is not glued to the wall! I kind of just tucked and glued and prayed it would stay put! the knots are all on one string and hang from the screw that was already there. the rest of the stuff is hanging from the same screw on it’s own piece of twine. some of the branches are tied together and other stuff is glued on. Then I hung it, tucked it behind the knots, and messed with it till I was satisfied! as for the orange box – I like the color too. But I’ve had that pop of color long enough it’s just time for a change! i painted it that color years ago. It was blue when I bought it at an antique shop and it stayed that color for a long time. Not sure what color I will do this time but I have a feeling it will be on the white side of the color spectrum 😉
Oh my goodness, Jill!! You know when you see a home and it makes you want to change every single thing in yours and go in a different direction…yep, you just did that to me!!
Awww, Pam, you are too sweet! Thanks so much, you just gave me the best complement! your house is totally awesome – I think it’s in a class or two above mine!!
Before we had our landscaping don3 and some grasses added, I used to snip the feathery plumes of my neighbor’s grasses! I won’t have to be a grass thief this year because there are so many grasses growing in our side yard. LOL.
Your home looks so cozy and fresh. I like the whites and the neutrality of it all. I’m contemplating stripping all my red French country wallpaper in the kitchen and going for a cleaner look. Why do I create these jobs for myself?
🙂 Aren’t neighbors great! LOL! I wasn’t sure I wanted all light walls 15 years ago when we started but now I am SO glad I went with it! Makes turning it all white much easier!
Beautiful Jill! Your she looks so cozy and clean. Very well done! I like the color of your door….I think it compliments the walls well….just my opinion. I need to go raid the woods…but cant seem to find time till season is almost over and then do it all again…LOL! Enjoy your fall!
Thanks Angie! Send your girls out for sticks and stuff – see what they come up with!!
It all looks wonderful! I love the rope knots wreath. It is awesome. And I love how the arrangement framed your picture. So fun when it just happens! I kinda like the orange box-it goes well for fall, adding a bright spot of color!
Thanks! You can get some knots for yourself from the etsy shop I bought them from if you want! I’m so glad i got some. I think the orange box has been a fun pop of color but it has been there long enough that it’s time to change it up!! 😉
shut up. this is amazing. i love how you used those knots! i would have never imagined using them for that, but i absolutely love it. yet again, i have house envy 🙂
xoxo
LOL! I was wondering what you would say Ali! I just love these knots. Not sure what made me think of doing this with them but the idea struck and I went with it!
Your home is gorgeous! My heart loves all of the white…but I’m stuck in the ’80’s so will probably forever live with my dark stained woodwork. But I do love admiring how you younger girls decorate. I love your fall arrangement. Put some heavy stones or a bag of marbles in the bottom of your container so the little ones won’t be knocking it over. And I really like the color & contrast of your front door the way it is. I’m sure whatever you do will look beautiful!
Thank you Sheila! I didn’t always have all white but my husband wanted light colored walls so when we started out 15 years ago the walls of the first room got painted the color that is throughout the house now! It really is a good color – warm but not too off-white! And the front door will no doubt stay the way it is for awhile longer since I have lots of projects to keep me busy!
Absolutely gorgeous Jill!! I love the 3D Fall artwork! Your home is beautiful!!
Thank you Leslie! I had fun with my fall decor this year!
The pictures of the rope knot decor just doesn’t do it justice. It is even prettier than the picture shows. And I love how the arrangement by the door frames the picture above it. It’s especially neat since it just happen to work out that way. Always fun to see your decor.
Thanks Mom! I think the rope art doesn’t show up as 3D as it really is in photos. i like it too – it was fun to put together!
Jill, you are so talented and artistic. I love the rope knots on the wall with the fall sticks, herbs, etc. surrounded by the frame and that pillow is amazing. Did you paint that by hand? I look forward to a post on it. Come on, get to it! Your blog admirers await. 😀
Liz
Thanks Liz! No, I didn’t paint the pillow cover. I traded pillow covers with a gal on etsy – she wanted my union jack pillow in yellow. And I just loved this one! So we traded. And I meant to do a blog post and feature her and I just haven’t done it yet. Kept thinking I would get my bedroom all fluffed and pretty and use it there and take some pics – hasn’t happened yet but I will do a blog post soon – will just use somewhere else to stage it!
I so love your knots!!! What a fantastic 3D Fall display. I will just enjoy your Fall decor from here. I have a few Pumpkins, and that is about it. My kids enjoy spreading those string spider webs over everything, but this is such a busy time of year for me with work and kids school that I just have to say, everything has a season, and this isn’t my season to decorate too much for Fall!
🙂 Thanks Karen! I don’t usually do this much for fall but got a streak of inspiration this year! Tomorrow I hope to do some fluffing in my living room – it needs it badly!
Your house is beautiful!! That much white in my house would never last. 🙂
LOL 🙂 lots of people say that but I know there are moms with littles out there who do it! It’s amazing how well the drop cloth fabric holds up for slip covers and how easily they can be washed up as good as new! And using good paint on walls means they clean up easily too! But I hear you – I didn’t have this much white when my kids were little.
Jill each additional glimpse into your home is lovelier than the last. I love every details. The pillow, I am intrigued by and can’t wait to see a post on it in the future. The little Merci tag, perfection. When can I move in 🙂
Thanks Amy! I will be posting more about my house this year – Christmas is my favorite for decor – I will try to do more full room shots so you can see it all! And the not-so-pretty too – my living room has been minus its woodwork for 5 years now. I’m still holding out a little hope that it will get put in this year before Christmas. Our financing for our furnace came through so hopefully we can soon have that project out of the way!
I wish I had a neighbors stick pile 🙂 I have another fall project in mind but it won’t happen unless I can find some twigs, and some berries….
come on over and raid my neighbors stick pile!
I like the door as is! I need to make a stomp across our property for some fall decor besides the wildflowers that don my table in all seasons. Not today though! RAIN!
Yeah I hear you Melanie – RAIN!! Hope it gets it out of its system cause I have a wedding to photograph next Saturday and it’s outside!
oh my goodness will you please please please come and decorate with me? I heart you and your blog and your style SO much!!!
Jaime
