I had a really cool blog post started today. Then we took off for some really fun evening plans and it got really late till we got home. So the really cool blog post is still sitting in ‘drafts’ and I just don’t have the stamina to get it written. I need more brain power and more time! So it waits. But I didn’t want to disappoint you if you came around looking for something new so I’m throwing out something just for a little fun. If you know me in real life chances are you know exactly what this is and where. If not have you ever seen the like??
What is it?
It can’t be, can it?
Who does this and why in the world is it a ‘tradition’??!!!
Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts!!!
Maid-Rite! And I have no idea who or why….it grosses me out!
Laura, it is really a gross idea – but it doesn’t seem to adversely affect their business! There is always a line – a lot of times back the road several cars!
Yep, Laura said it. It’s at Maid Rite and it is everyone’s chewed gum who goes through the drive through. Years of tradition….for whatever reason!!! Wouldn’t you just love to be the person who has to clean it off from time to time? :S
Aleta, I would definitely not be volunteering to clean it off! It seems to get worse every time after it’s been cleaned off!
Maid-Rite, of course.
Love the pic with you peeking out of the mirror!
Thanks Sis! I kinda liked that pic too!
Like they said- YUK!
🙂 Yeah Melanie, it’s yuk, but I am so used to it that I don’t really think about it that much! Of course when I DO stop and think about it it’s very YUK!
Disgusting. I turn my head the other way every time I drive past that building. And, no. I’ve never been there. 🙂
Jody, please tell me you have at least had the Maid-Rites?! They are so worth ignoring that gum – it is just gum after all and you don’t have to touch it!!!
I have never been there. I always try to convince Dan to eat there when we are in G’ville (which isn’t very often) but never do. I’ve eaten a Maid Rite but never been there. That is pretty gross – that gum. Wonder how old the oldest piece is?
Tell Dan to go through the drive through and get a bag of those delicious Maid-Rites and then head to the Greenville park – or as my girls call it – the Duck park!! Awesome way to spend an evening! And call us up – we’ll join you!
It reminds me of Bubblegum Alley in San Luis obispo, CA….my family & I left our mark there in the late 80’s or early 90’s.
Renee
Bubblegum Alley is a local tourist landmark in downtown San Luis Obispo, California, known for its accumulation of used bubble gum on the walls of an alley. According to the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Improvement Association, the history of who actually started this gum fiesta is “a little sketchy”[3]. Some historians believe that the tradition of the Alley started after WWII as a San Luis Obispo High School graduating class event[4]. Others believe it to have started in the late 1950s as rivalry between San Luis Obispo High School and Cal Poly students. As soon as the Poly students suspected that the high school was trying to out-do them on the gum walls, the college students stepped up their game and immediately became more creative, thus launching Bubblegum Alley[3]. In any case, by the 1970s Bubblegum Alley was well under way. When shop owners complained that it was “unsanitary and disgusting”[5], the alley underwent a full cleaning. The gum graffiti survived two full cleanings in the ’70s[3], but when, in 1996, the BIA attempted to have another full cleaning, it was not passed.
Renee that is some fun info! I didn’t know there was a bubblegum alley in CA!!! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂 Maybe the people in Greenville, Ohio thought they needed their own little ‘Bubblegum Alley’!!
Ewww! Wondering if your girls think it’s cool or gross? Btw, what happened to your cute photo you had at the top? The one above would be a fun replacement! 🙂
You know, Pam, none of us really think about it one way or another too much!!! We are so used to it, and we love their food, and it’s just part of the landscape!! I think they would all say it’s gross but it’s not a huge deal for us like it is for some that are not used to it!
Pam thanks for telling me my photo was gone! I did some rearranging recently and hadn’t even noticed that I somehow made that disappear! I didn’t mean for that to go away! Thanks, I’ll get it back asap!
Chewed up gum??? Oh my. What a funny post. I can’t wait to see your enough brain power stamina post.
Go figure, huh Amy? I have no idea why this became a tradition. And the ‘really cool post’ might not be so really cool to you – you’ll have to let me know when I finally get it posted!!!! 🙂
Hi Jill, thanks for taking the time to come over, visit and comment at Quirky Vistas today. Love this post. I have no idea what Maid-rites is, but that’s funny. Love the shot with the hands exchanging money behind you. Good timing!
